Approximately one out of five children has a diagnosable mental health disorder at any given time. Family physicians and pediatricians are an important resource for parents and families to discuss their child's emotional development and mental health.

This conference is hosted by the Maryland Behavioral Health Integration in Pediatric Primary Care (BHIPP) program. Topics include core communication skills useful in addressing common pediatric and adolescent mental health concerns and a module on anxiety disorders. The module will examine presentations of anxiety in primary care and interventions (non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic) for the treatment of anxiety.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strategies for eliciting and clarifying mental health needs in the course of a pediatric mental health visit
  • Describe brief interventions for commonly encountered concerns, including anxiety symptoms
  • Identify non-pharmacologic interventions for the treatment of anxiety disorders
  • Describe the role and evidence base of SSRI medication in the management of anxiety disorders
  • Explain the BHIPP consultation model

Light breakfast and lunch included.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:30am and the session will start at 9:00am.
